No More Unlawful Gun-Free Zones on Public Property

Gun Owners of America Urges Support for SB 1065: No More Unlawful Gun-Free Zones on Public Property

Gun Owners of America is calling on all Texas legislators to support Senate Bill 1065 by Chairman Bob Hall—a vital piece of legislation that defends the rights of lawful gun owners and puts an end to unlawful anti-gun policies on publicly owned or leased property.

What SB 1065 Does

SB 1065 closes a dangerous loophole that has allowed private contractors—who manage taxpayer-owned or taxpayer-leased venues—to override Texas law by posting “No Guns” signs (30.06 or 30.07 notices) and creating de facto gun-free zones. This includes places where the state has not banned carry by law.

Texans who hold a valid License to Carry (LTC) should not be turned away from public property simply because a private contractor wants to impose their own anti-Second Amendment agenda.

Why It Matters

This issue is not hypothetical. For years, the State Fair of Texas—hosted on public fairgrounds—has excluded LTC holders in defiance of state law. Contractors operating under public contracts have used “gun-free” signage to push a political agenda at odds with the rights of law-abiding citizens.

SB 1065 stops this abuse.

How SB 1065 Works

  • Prohibits contractors from posting 30.06 or 30.07 signs unless state law specifically prohibits firearms on the property.

  • Requires public contracts to include language forbidding anti-gun policies that contradict Texas law.

  • Establishes a complaint and enforcement mechanism to ensure compliance.

  • Directs fines collected from violations to the Crime Victims’ Compensation Fund—turning accountability into a public benefit.

GOA Strongly Supports SB 1065

This legislation is about more than carry rights—it’s about upholding the rule of law, protecting public trust, and ensuring that contractors cannot subvert state policy using taxpayer resources.

SB 1065 is a commonsense, constitutional measure that deserves broad bipartisan support. GOA urges the Texas House to pass this bill without delay.

Texans who follow the law should not be punished. Let’s hold contractors accountable—and defend the rights of law-abiding citizens.
